Really though, the only way to know for sure if you damaged anything is to change the oil and look for bits of metal, and pull the valve cover and inspect it.
Bring it to your local auto zone or some car part store and they have a handheld code sender that will plug into your car that will say whats wrong with it if anything... when I did that I bent valves and snaped pushrods! Your lucky yours didnt
its fine.just dont do it again. was the screeching sound you heard possibly just your tires? when you drop to that low of a gear doing that fast it could have broke the tires grip a little bit. or was it actually from the engine
Since it is a Beemer engine, it is probably fine. I don't know why you want to shift to 4th from 6th. It's not a semi. Maybe you should have been in 5th.
i would take it to the dealer and have it checked out. the people at auto zone are not mechanics.
I was trying to shift from 6th to 4th gear at around 80 miles per hour but accidentally shifted into 2nd a few days ago. As soon as I noticed the car jump and make a high pitched screech, i pushed the clutch back in and pulled over. I never fully let the clutch out. I let the car idle in neutral for a while and decided to rev the engine up to 3,000 rpm just to see if everything sounded okay. Although the engine oil temp went a tad above 250 F (normal operating temp), it quickly dropped back to a normal temp. I continued my drive home which went on for about an hour after the incident.
I've been driving the car normally for the past few days and it seems like nothing is wrong with it. It still accelerates nicely, I don't hear and knocking noise and I don't notice transmission issues.
How can I tell if my engine is damaged in any way? I try my best to keep my engine healthy to prevent a loss of power.
The car is a 6 speed manual 2013 BMW 335i.
