The AVERAGE price for replacement, both front and rear, for the average inexpensive Japanese made car is approx $1k, part and labor. As a minimum, you could have "shopped" this by contacting the service departments of similar makes of cars in your vicinity for their rates. If you don't do brake work on time, it could cost you even more money.
Being a "chick who knows nothing about cars" is no excuse for being ignorant. A car's ability to for from 60-0 mph safely is far more important than being able to go from 0-60 mph.
No one is holding a gun to your head and forcing you to get your car serviced there. Shop around for a better price, BUT make certain when you DO shop around, that you get price quotes for the same service. And get it in writing.
Since they gave you a quote it should have the parts you need listed on it, use that as a reference and see how much they cost online, thats what I do. Or you could buy cheaper versions of what theyre quouting you and have someone install it for you. Ive done both and it saves you tons of money.
I have an AWD Mitsubishi Endeavor and one of the major tire centers quoted me $1060 for front and back brake pads and rotors. Needless to say I was pretty upset. Am I being ripped off? It's pretty apparent that I'm a chick who knows nothing about cars so I'm sure they see that. I don't hear and squealing and i don't have and vibration in my wheel. I really don't have any issues stopping. I don't doubt that I need pads or something because it's been a long time since I had them replaced, but that is waaayyy too much money for me.
