Would you recommend Sea Foam for a light lifter noise in a '77 Thunderbird?

IF you are confident what you are hearing is indeed a lifter, you should do a couple of things.

First, you need 195 degree thermostat. Hot oil is clean oil.

As for Mobil 1, it's a decent oil but a status quo oil. In a hot engine it will clean some varnish.

A far superior product is Amsoil.

You could also be hearing a lifter that has a couple thousandths valve lash in it that disappears after some heat expansion.

FAR better options out there than Sea Foam, btw.

If the oil treatments didn't help, then the sea foam won't work either. The only way to fix it is to tear down the top end of the engine and replace it. You might as well replace all the lifters and push rods, even replacing the rocker arms would be a good idea. You might as well do all that while your that deep into the engine.

Mobil1 has stronger detergent properties than regular motor oil. Try this before tearing the top end of the motor apart.

STP has no detergent properties to clean anything!

Hi, sounds like a leaking exhaust manifold gasket.. they WELL make a ticking sound when they leak.. and then the ticking well stop once the motor heats up and things expand and seal the gap..

good luck

I have a '77 Thunderbird with a '99 rebuilt engine. It has a lifter ticking noise, usually only when the motor is cold. I've used STP motor treatment and Power Punch. It took away some of the noise, but it's still there.

I've read some reviews for Sea Foam on Amazon, and they were pretty scary, even some of the favorable reviews. I'm very skeptical about putting this stuff into my car.

Would you recommend it, or do you have another suggestion?
