Would a leaking fuel tank cause a check engine light (vaccum leak) ?

I have a check engine light on my 1999 Honda Accord

It says P1457

But my fuel tank is also leaking bad and I need to buy a new one. Can this be causing the actual check engine light?

Your leaking tank has nothing to do with the check engine light. Your code is an evaporator canister issue. It's part of the emission control system. 9 times out of 10 when a car throws a trouble code it is engine related as in emissions or fuel/air mix or a bad computer controlled sensor that the bcm is reading. . The car is not going to say "your gas tank is leaking" with a trouble code. Mot?rhead does not know what he is talking about. I've been doing this kind of work for 25 years. Go on YouTube. There's a video about it. You probably have a cracked hose coming from it and it's sucking in too much air into your engine. Your leaking gas tank is a separate issue. That ones more important than the emission trouble code. Go find the canister under the car. Inspect it and look for a broken hose. The canister itself is probably no good and plugged up and needs replacemt. They rust out under the car

A very common late 90's code, P1457 is a failure in one of the evap system solenoid valves. There are 2 culprits, the Vent Control Valve & the 2 Way Bypass Valve. They are located under the vehicle, roughly below the left rear seat area. They short out due to corrosion/contamination from water seeping into the valves. I changed both, but the real culprit seems to be the 2 Way bypass Valve. Leaking fuel does not trigger the check engine light Cheaper to buy a used gas tank from a junk yard, vehicle thats been wrecked in the front Don't buy a tank from a car thats got hit in the rear otherwise it will leak too.

Hope it helps

A leaking gas tank CAN cause an EVAP code and that WILL turn on the check engine light. If the EVAP system can't pull a vacuum on the entire fuel system, it'll fail the EVAP test and set a code and check engine light. The whole purpose of EVAP is to test the integrity of the entire fuel system to prevent evaporative emissions.

If the tank is leaking you'll get a emission leak code. The carbon canister vent valve or the 2-way valve are common failure problems. I wouldn't drive a vehicle with a gas leak. Your CEL coming on will be the least of your worries while you are recovering in the burn center of a hospital!

Of course. The gas tank must hold pressure, or the whole system will be off. You do not have to buy a new tank, but can easily seal the old one. If it is rusted out, you can braze it, but steam clean it first. Of there are fiber glass sealing kits you can use as well. But is must still be totally dry first.

ABSOLUTELY: The emissions purge system will not be working correctly.
