Will a car have a transmission problem if the following happens.. ?

Many cars will prevent such shifting at high speeds. In we do manage it? Transmission stresses can result in failure of components.

A test was conducted by graham hill ( racing driver now deceased) by running at full power and selecting reverse then forward as soon as car moved in any direction. Thus having car jack itself back and forth with wheels spinning.

After about a dozen goes...differential failed.

Thus gearbox's can be fairly tough. It was not known at time this would occur and bets were made as to how long trans would last!

Not a good idea to try for self as can get expensive fast.

Not easy to select first or reverse in a manual car once at speed anyway as often no or poor synchromesh due to such low ratios.

Most modern manuals wont let you shift the car into a forward gear if you are moving to fast. automatics are the same.. if you can shift it into a forward drive gear you wont be moving very fast. Unless you can get a car that is 30 years old or older then you try that you may be able to see the rear end splatter across the road..

Post again when you find yourself with a completely ruined transmission. We anxious to hear all about it.

You can do it with manual in older car no problem. But you will destroy first gears synchronisation gear inside the transmission really fast.

Good livk

All vehicles should be stopped when shifting from reverse to drive. Otherwise SERIOUS damage can occur to your transmission.

It is certainly abuse, but it is not likely to damage anything ifthrottle opening is small. Switching the other way will destroy a transmission quickly, reverse is not as strong as low gear.

I would like to know, how will a transmission be ruined if I have a car in reverse, and without stopping the car, I put it into "Drive"?

Is this with certain cars makes I have to stop and then put the gear into "Drive"? If so, which makes?

I'm talking about both automatic and manual transmissions. Do I have to stop and the switch to drive for a certain transmission and car make?

I need help on which transmissions and car makes I can take from reverse into drive without stopping the car.
