Why won't my car start? Battery or alternator?

Hello

Connect the Jump Leads and let the other car charge your battery for 10 minutes before you start yours. Get it jump started again and take a Volt reading across your battery, As you slowly rev up it should go up to a Max of 14.5 Volts. If so this shows charging system OK. Run the car for 10-15 minutes and switch Off, Take another Volt reading, Should be 12 Volts. Leave for 15-20 minutes then take another reading. If it still shows 12 Volt the battery is OK. Batteries are 6 X 2 Volt cells but only give you 6 X lowest cell so if one is damaged 6 X 1.5 Volts = 9 Volts battery needs replacing.

If you check the Volt reading whilst you car is running and it goes over the 14.5 Volts the Voltage Regulator (Part of the Alternator) is faulty and may have cooked you battery.

You probably let the battery go completely dead, and that ruins lead/acid batteries.

Sometimes you can get them to take a charge, but their useful life has been greatly reduced.

I wouldn't waste any more time on that battery. Get a new one, and don't ever let it drain completely dead.

I would do a slow charge on your battery. Then, do a load test. If you want to check the alternator get a multi-meter and check the voltage. With the car running check the battery. If it is 13+ volts then the alternator is working. Commonly 14 Volts.

Invest in a new battery. replace the terminals, get rid of the corroded ends of the cables and cut them off leaving new wire so it can make some real good contact.

The alternator, take it off and take to autozone to get it tested.

Check your battery voltage then if it is good check it with car running to see if alternator is charging.if good here then check the amp draw on the starter solenoid . I don't think you will need to go any farther .

Nah just hasnt ran in awhile... Get it jumped it and keep it on for awhile

My car is in good condition. It sat in a garage for several months. It would not start, understandably. I charged the battery for several hours and it started when I turned the ignition. I let it run for 5 minutes thinking it would further charge the battery. After letting it sit for about 30 minutes it will not start/turn over, but the dome lights and door chime still work when I open the door. However the dome light is noticeably dimmer. After jumping the car to get it started again, this time I let it sit for a few days. After about 3 days, the dome lights and the door chime still work, the lights are still dimmer of course, and the car will not start. When I try to start it, I hear the engine turn over about once and then it 'dies trying.' Also when the car is running and driving, the lights will get brighter when I push the gas, and when I let off the gas, they get dimmer.

Does my car need a new battery or an alternator or something else?

Thank you for any suggestions, tips, tricks, or most importantly straight up correct answers that will solve my problem.
