Why is my truck making a putt-putt like sound?

A common problem with Fords. Clean the throttle body with carb cleaner on a rag and remove the idle control solenoid (the thing with the wires to it on top of the throttle body) and turn it over and clean all the black stuff in the holes using the carb cleaner.

When was the last time that the fuel filter was changed? Get the fuel pressure tested at a Ford dealership AFTER the fuel filter was changed.

Fords are famous for idle air control valve failures.

The Escape needs a new set of the two fan belts to stop the squealing. It would also benefit from a new fuel filter,a simple job.

Hi,

I recommend taking your Escape to a Ford Dealer near you to be diagnosed. Our certified technicians will be able to advise you of the next steps to reach a resolution.

Locate a dealer near you and set up an appointment with the link below:

You might also have a coil pack going bad. There's one coil per cylinder and if your check engine light is on, get your truck scanned at autozone (they do it for free) and see which cylinder is misfiring and replace the corresponding coil.

The only time I had that problem with car was when it run out of oil and I knackered the engine?

I have a 2006 ford escape, v6 3.0L, and when we start coming to a stop and idle, at say a stop sign or light, the truck starts putt-putting as if its out of gas or something and the RPM go down to 0 (no its not out of gas). So far it hasn't died on us but we had the same issue with our Focus and the couple people we took it to couldn't figure out whats wrong, I'm assuming we just have the same bad luck and its going to happen again.

also when we quickly accelerate say over the 3 RPM it makes this horrible squealing sound, is that something different or has to do with the issue above?
