Wait a second, You need to identify the system, If you have a continuous run compressor, and a blower that always runs, that is a type that's possible.

Others run in many modes to filter dry and provide breathable air.

You should consult a Tech who is schooled and experienced in your vehicle.

You could have factory air, add on air, dealer installed air, Auto-temp control and several others.

If you want to ask questions like this, we need the car's info.

Since you may not even be able to identify it, you need the right technician.

Your dealer can answer your questions , it's no big deal.

Show them the vehicle.

The center of the clutch at the pulley rotates or freewheels based on power to the field coil in the clutch magnet. When power goes there by whatever control you have on your system having satisfied safeties and switches in the system and being selected on the instrument panel...or not. in the case of continuous run.

The pulley wheel will turn even if the clutch is not engaged that drives the compressor.

The compressor should only run on A/C and defrost. If it's running any other time, you've got a wiring, control unit, or switch problem.

it also may not be running at all it will spin with the rest of the pulleys but it doesnt engage until the clutch inside grabs hold.
