you are burning fuel.
#1. Drain, flush and CLEAN the cooling system with one part powered acid cooling system cleaner.
1991 was a long time ago. The radiator is plugged, get a new one or have yours cleaned.
I have a 1991 Mazda RX7 and it never heats up to the danger point but it gets a centimeter or 2 past the normal temp. I have replaced the Fan Clutch and that solved it a little because it doesn't heat up when im driving it at the speed limit. Whats could be wrong?
Also the temp sensor was chaged.. could the fan clutch possibly be defective still? How can I test it.
