All moving parts on a machine will eventually fail.
An alternator is a bit more complicated as it's electrical as well; typical causes of failure are worn bearings, worn brushes, and failed rectifier packs. The last cause is very common, and is often caused by giving or accepting a jump start without both vehicle operators knowing exactly how to do so correctly, and also by idiot mechanics who test the alternator by disconnecting a battery lead when the engine is running. That almost always turns a working alternator into a broken one.
An Alternator is a mechanical device, made by human beings. As such, it is prone to failure after so much use. The REASON it failed really isn't important. The fact that it DID fail is reason enough. Now take the car to a shop where they do auto repairs and have it replaced.
Well, as a 'mature' woman (55+ and lovin' it), I can explain this. Firstly, is the alternator on the outside or inside of the car?
Secondly, what colour is the car?
If it is a light blue hyundai getz and the alternator is on the inside then take it to a nice young mechanic and get him to look at it. That's what I always do with my one. Very nice people.
old age, a defect, something else like a bad belt, and the alt is really OK
yes
The battery was fine
