Where are the brakes at...?

Posted at: 2015-01-07
Older cars,(pre 80's) had drum brakes on all 4 wheels. Then in the 80's and 90's some cars had disc brakes on the fron and drums on the rear. Nowdays most cars have disc brakes on all 4 wheels.

The answers so far, miss the point of your question. You need to take off a front wheel/tire. It sounds like you never did it before. Then you can see your front disc brake. You'll see the disc brake rotor, and the caliper, with the brake pads, that squeeze the rotor. Once you know what it looks like and where it is, you can remove a rear tire/wheel and find out what kind of rear brakes you have.

This is a typical front disc brake:

This is a typical rear drum brake:

Answer: The brakes are immediately under (behind) the wheels. Remove the wheels and you expose the brakes.

Duh on all the wheels.

Most cars at that time and era had disc in front, drums in back. And yes all cars have brakes on all 4 wheels.

Just look at you wheels the SS should have nice spoke rims and you can see thru them if not take the wheel off and look. very easy to find out. Something you should know.

All modern cars have brakes on all four wheels. Some have four disc brakes; some have disc brakes in front and drum brakes in the rear.

This question is directed towards cars in general, but also specifically for my car. I drive an 86 SS el camino.

I just wana know if brakes, really disc brakes, are on all four tires of a car. I thought they were only on the front two wheels, but someone told me otherwise. Just wondering. Thanks.
