I usually wait until it's less than 1/4 full, maybe 1/6 to 1/7. I have bars so I wait until there's 3 bars left. That tells me I have about 2-3 gallons left which is enough for a round trip from work to home. There are gas stations near home and work so I'll be fine.
In winter always keep above 1/2 of a tank. Never below 1/4 of a tank the rest of the year. They say the fuel pump works harder the lower the gas level gets in the tank.
I start looking for attractive prices on top tier gasoline around the 1/2 tank mark and get serious about it around the 1/4 tank mark. Although there is some controversy about it, the conventional wisdom is that allowing the gasoline to get below about 1/4 tank regularly gradually cooks the fuel pump and shortens its life. But that 1/4 tank mark is conservative and most are okay down to near 1/8 tank.
Many times I have been glad to have stopped for gas before it was a big deal. I have had all sorts of obstacles: the door would not unlatch, the cap would not come off, my bank card (and all Wells Fargo cards) stopped working for a day or so, power went out across the city so no pumps worked, nasty storms set in....
Usually around a 1/4. So the fuel pump is cooled better (plenty of gas to disipate heat in the tank), Incase you need to make an emergency trip you always have some gas in it. also some people believe the fuller the tank the less condensation can happen in it.
You see addicted to the ":)" symbol for some unknown reason. You find this "cute?" When to buy gas? You really have to ask? Two main factors and the ONLY factors are: 1. when needed to reach the next fueling point while on a trip. 2. when the prices are the cheapest. Ever since King George Bush II and his VP came to office, Mr. Chaney invited all of his friends in the oil industry to the White House. The onslaught on the American people as to oil prices began. Some tiny insignificant refinery in obscure Africa a mishap? Jack the prices up. The US government shall not interfere. The reporting of oil taken from the ground? Do what you want and save money on taxes. Want to charge the military more for oil products? Go ahead. Those who buy fuel on Fridays for the weekend pay a premium in prices. The middle of the week tends to be better, on the average. The quantity left in the tank has no bearing as to quality nor much of anything. Want proof? OK. Since 2011 Americans that drive the Chevy Volt has recorded, time and time again, over thousands of miles with less than 10 gallons of gasoline. That means months and months at a time. No harm done, no fouling of anything, no myths and no false information. In times past in cars without the tight fuel system would allow chemical fumes to escape deteriorating the components of the gasoline. Not true today. You do not have a Chevy Volt. You buys so many gallons a week. Buy when cheap. Saving pennies per gallon adds up to bunch of money, no matter the amount.

1/4 tank.
1/4 tank.
1/4 tank.
1/4 tank.
Is it when 1/4, 1/3, 1/2, 2/3, or 3/4 full? :)
1/4 tank.
I work on the factor of price and also if you are full all the time the weight of the fuel actually gives you less mpg, that why race drivers a relative small and thin for the saving in weight and the cars go faster towards the end of the race
Most all current fuel injected cars & trucks have an electric fuel pump inside the fuel tank. The pump is submerged in the fuel, which helps cool it. So, best not to let it run too low, as the pump is then 'high & dry' & only cooled by the fuel running thru the pump.
We live where there is miles and miles between town., I rarely let my tank go below 1/2.
several factors: 1) price 2)stirring-up any sediment when tank gets too low 3) weather: high humidity & temperature changes = condensation inside tank.....less air space means less condensation.
I fill-up anytime mine gets anywhere below 1/4 th..

The more full the tank during Winter the less water condensation in the tank.

3/4 ---- it's cheaper to fill up.
Just at the last minute for me.
For a lot of people it is when they can afford to.
any time before it is empty
