Overdrive is NOT a special gear. It's just another name for the highest gear in the transmission. It's a marketing tool to make you think you have something special.
All the time! The transmission will automatically shift to overdrive when it's needed for speeds of 55 and higher on level ground with no trailer behind.
Overdrive, on an automatic transmission?
Leave it on unless you're descending a long hill. All other times, let the transmission computer figure out which gear to use. It will do a better job than you can.
The tranny and computer will switch it in/out as needed.
Unless you are towing or carrying a heavy load, leave it on.
Your owner's manual should tell you the best use for it.
the only time you should NOT use it, is when towing or hauling a heavy load.
I have a 2003 dodge Dakota with overdrive and I don't know when to use it? I know it's better on gas and allows your tranny to work easier but when do I use it? I live in a subdivision with a lot of stop and go driving. But I heard that you should keep it on just highway and then I've heard to just keep it on all the time? Thank you guys
