The brake fluid needs to be topped up when the level in the reservoir drops below the marker on the reservoir.
If the level drops suddenly or repeatedly, there is a serious problem that is safety critical and needs to be repaired.
Some manufacturers recommend changing your brake fluid every few years as it absorbs moisture which can corrode brake cylinders.
Thing is: the system doesn't consume fluid . . . if the level goes down, there's a leak that needs attention....pronto.
Old style brake fluid is hygroscopic: it attracts moisture.....that degrades the effectiveness of the brakes and promotes rust. Check your owners manual to see if you should have fluid flushed and replaced at intervals (few of us ever do). And if your car uses silicone fluid, it shouldn't need changing.
Note: like everything, brake fluid expands when warmed: check the fluid when it's cold out and it may look like it's low - - - fill it and it may overflow as the engine compartment gets hot.
ALLbrake fludis are HYGROSCOPIC meaning that they attract and hold MOPISTURE from the air! As time goes by, this fludi turns DARK BROWN and becomes water saturated, and it loses it's BOILING POINT PROTECTION and turns into liquid sandpapr with more time! The BEST car makes insist that you POWER FLUSH new fluid into the system every 2-4 years of use! IT is OVERLOOKED by car care pofessionals everywhere. BAD FLUID causes master cylidner, caliper, and line failures as water truns into GRUNGE in system! BRAKE LINES rot from the inside out, not the other way aound! USE ONLY FRESH FLUID from a sealed container from yoru DEALERSHIP< ONLY! AUto store JUNK fluids are not worth the effort!. As pads WEAR OUT, THE FLUID LEVEL DROPS, BUT THIS IS normal! yoU CAN EVEN USE brake fludi level AS A WAY OF TELLILNG HOW MUCH YOUR BRAKE PADS ARE WEARING DOWN! Thsi fluid must be POWER FLUSHED to get rid of evil residue that may remain in system, as it settles around SEALS and other brake parts! GOODLUCK!!
only and ONLY if you have a leak or when you bleed or flush brakes. NEVER EVER just add. The level goes down on in the master when the brakes wear. If you are low in fluid you should have brakes inspected it might be time for brakes or you have a leak.
Most of the car is having indicator now by which you can see that brake fluid is required or not.
ONLY when you have serviced the brakes. the system is sealed and that level should only drop as the pads and or shoes wear. adding fluid can change he accuracy of the sensor in the master cylinder.
When the level is low! There will be a light that comes on on your dashboard to indicate it is low, this is usually the handbrake light so if the handbrake is off and the light is on then time to fill her up.
Another indication is after youve hit a tree after trying to apply the brakes and they have failed.
At exactly 4:45 PM on Monday, or 3:30 PM on Saturday!
When you feel that the brakes aren`t working properly, or every few months it needs to be added for lubrication.
