What would happen if you don't get a differential fixed on the car?

How much would it cost to get fixed?

I have a kia rio 2001.

You could brake down far from home, at night, have to towed away if your on a highway or busy road.

Call a few local auto repair shops for price estimates, also call a few auto salvage yards for the price of a used diff, then ask if the car recommend a mechanic to install it.

Nothing as this car has no differential it is a front wheel drive and has cv joints, i presume a friend has told you its the diff. If it is the cvs and they are very bad make a clicking sound when in a straight line accelerating they need replacing asap (not so bad if its only whilst turning and accelerating still - still worn should be replaced now but not urgent) they need replacing asap, not replacing them can result in 3 things hopefully no. 1 your wheel just suddenly locks up 2. Your wheel gets extreme wobble losing nearly all control, could do this and be locked also or 3. Your wheel falls off, like right off with half the cv with it. The wheel falling off with unmaintained worn out cvs is not that uncommon. As for price do what most people do and call a work shop, they also could have told you it does not have a differential.

The differential usually lasts the life of the car, or longer than the engine.

Ask at auto salvage yards and they will tell you as the diff is usually good in all of them.

What happens if you don't get if fixed. You stop moving.

If the differential completely goes out, the car won't move. As for cost? In a front wheel drive car, that means rebuilding the transmission because the differential is built into the transmission, and if it goes out, it will likely take the whole transmission with it. So figure about $1500 for a cheap, basic automatic up to $4000 or more for an expensive, complicated one.
