What would cause oil to not show up on a dipstick?

The S350 takes 8.5 quarts of oil, which is just over 2 gallons, if you really put 3.5 gallons in you need to drain 1.5 gallons out whether the dipstick says full or not. DO NOT RUN THE ENGINE WITH THAT MUCH OIL IN THE CRANKCASE, you WILL do major damage. If you meant quarts then you need another 5 quart jug of oil. I'm assuming your oil indicator is actually you oil pressure gauge which just measures the pressure coming from the pump. Join a Benz forum and do a lot of research before you do any more maintenance to your car.

first off call a local auto parts and find out the right amount AND right unit of measurement.

litters and gallons are not the same

even liters and quarts are off by a little, so 4 litters still won't make a gallon. are you following me?.

NOW that that is solved.

are you sure you are pulling the engine oil dip stick or are you doing like my friend's dad who kept adding engine oil like 8/4ts) to a 4 cyl(4 Qts)while he was looking at the transmission fluid dipstick. LOL I Know!.

its not like you can see the oil dripping or anything else. IF the owners manual says its 1.5 Gall(U.S or Imperial) that is how much you SHOULD add. just because you don't see the DS mark at the full it means that it needs more, someone could have changed the oil dipstick and you might not have the right one. therefore it will show empty OR even full when it needs more, just follow the owners manual or ask how many you need at the auto parts store.

If it is not showing on the dipstick then you might not have enough oil in your engine. Try to add some more until you see the dipstick get wet with some engine oil. Then adjust the level until you reach the normal/required oil level.

I once ruined the engine of our camper when I failed to check engine oil before the long drive. Then right in the middle of a long isolated highway, boom! Engine was knocking. We apparently had a leak and it spelled disaster when we left home.

If you cannot figure it out and adding more oil doesnt change a thing, you better call a mechanic to be sure.

They will sell wrenches to anyone.

Measuring what you removed was not 3 gallons , was it.

The oil capacity is a spec to know before you even buy parts.

When you have a car like that, you need to have your homework done.

I have spent years getting conflicting information on my benz.

But oil system capacity is in your guidebooks supplied with the vehicle.

Most car engines are around 5 quarts. start your thinking there as you verify your info looking it up.

smaller ones take less bigger ones take more, 4x4's have deep pans and heavy trucks have luberfiners so the capacity grows with bigger stuff.

Get piece of thin wire and stick it right down the dip stick hole as far as it can go to hit the bottom of the sump, pull it out and you should see how far up the oil is. Then you can mark the wire at the top of the dip stick tube to the full mark and compare where the oil level is. As it could be you just have measured wrong, but this way you will sure know what is going on.

The dipstick is too short? Plugged tube? Gremlin in the engine drinking it all?

3 gallons out? On a Benz? Sounds fishy since a 24V Cummins uses that much, but I don't know what the benz takes and I'm not looking it up. Even still... what you removed is irrelevant. If it was low to begin with, it's still going to be low when you put the same amount in.

Why guess at it? Working on cars nowadays requires steps to the library here and there. I would doubt there is room for 8.5 gallons. I only know that diesels demand frequent oil changes.

I think Parker is right, you mean QUARTS not galloons. To put in 3 1/2 quarts isn't enough. Keep adding until it shows on the dipstick.

Make sure you didn't put the oil in the transmission instead of the engine.. I saw a guy do that.

Go to your local auto parts store, and ask them how many quarts your specific car takes. They should tell you. Then you can buy the oil from there.

I have a 1994 Mercedes Benz S350 Diesel. I changed the oil recently and 3 gal of oil came out, but there was no oil on the dipstick, so I added 3.5 gal of new oil and it still won't show on the dipstick. I don't want to keep adding oil and cause major damage. Btw, there was some minor sludge, however, the car runs perfectly. No unusual sounds , no warning lights. Oil indicator is at the top , no blue smoke. What's going on ?

3 gallons should be over full on that engine. did you put the drain plug back in and is the filter sealing? i see big issues unless you meant 3 qts rather than gallons.

Do you mean quart or liter instead of gal? You need more oil if you do.

Engine lubricant oil capacity:

8 liter / 8.5 U.S. qt / 7 imp. qt

Put 4 gallons of oil in it and be done with it.

Maybe you have the Wrong dipstick in your car. If you had your car serviced somewhere they might have switched dipsticks, does the one you are checking look kind of short?

Go buy a new dip stick, call Benz and ask how many Qts it takes NOT GALLONS,Really, come on Dude...

Did you ever think of reading the specifications pages in the glove compartment manual? It will list the crankcase oil capacity.

probably someone replaced the dipstick with the wrong replacement.

all that oil went somewhere!!!!

are you checking it on a hill?

I do not know?
