What would cause my truck to run rough and stall at idle?

I have a 94' B3000 (Ford Ranger equivalent) and I found holes in the degraded plastic air intake pipe running between the intake manifold and air filter box. Also, I found a cracked vacuum line running to the fuel vapor canister solenoid. I used duct tape to temporarily cover the holes in the intake pipe and I replaced the vacuum line. The truck is idling much better now. BTW, the holes were not visible from the top. I found the holes on the bottom of the pipe when I removed it.

Air fuel mix issue. Often result of idle speed control valve sticking or air leak on intake side.

Scanning for fault codes may assist in resolving.

Can't rely on gas gauge as it may be bent arm in tank on sender unit. As it only seems to occur on low tank levels. .. Are we having fuel pressure issues? Try removing filler cap..changing fuel filter. Check fuel pressure in system.

when was it last serviced (tuned up)? If it's due or overdue, get it serviced and then see how it runs before messing about replacing parts at random.

If it has been serviced properly I'd be with Hornchurch and looking at fuel supply - is the new pump the right one for the truck? is the fuel filter/line clear?

You could try cleaning the Idle Air Control Valve. It sounds like the valve is sticking. or you could replace it.

You could try replaceing your fuel pressure regulator

I have a 1994 ranger with the 4.0 and automatic. When I start it up and it's in park or neutral, it runs fine (about 900 rpm). When I put it in drive or reverse it drops to about500-600 rpm and idles really rough acting like it's about to stall. I give it gas and it's fine and drives perfect. But sometimes when I come to a stop, as soon as I come to a stop (sometimes when I haven't even came to a stop yet, I'm just hitting the brakes really hard) it just stalls out. I've noticed the past few days that it's been doing it only when I'm below 1/4 tank. The guy I got it from said he put a new fuel pump in it and ever since then it runs out of gas usually at about 1/8th of a tank. Every time it stalls it will start right back up and take off driving so I know it's not out of gas. What could be wrong? I've changed the plugs, wires, and air filter but that didn't fix it.
