What would cause my steering wheel to lock up while driving and car shut off?

If the engine dies not shut off the steering wheel will be very difficult to turn but it does not lock up like when the ignition switch is turned off. You said you heard squealing. That could be because of a badly slipping power steering belt or the power steering pump is going out. That should not have caused the engine to due though that may be another issue if it started when it was raining the electrical system needs to be checked out for any short circuits.

Hi,

If your vehicle is a Ford, I recommend taking it your local Ford Dealer to be diagnosed. If your vehicle will not start, I recommend getting it towed to the dealer. Our certified technicians will be glad to take a look and answer any inquiries.

Locate a dealer near you, and set up an appointment with the link below:

Good luck, and have a great day! =)

Too many variables, so suggest you visit you friendly neighborhood mechanic.... 'Cause steering locking-up while driving could be deadly...

Is this the Hyundai Sonata person again

So this morning, I was driving out of my complex and my steering wheel locked up and my car shut off and my battery light came on. So I turned my car off and back on and it started right up. So I drove for about another 2 miles and made a left into a turning lane and my steering wheel got tight again. My car didn't shut off this time, but I believe I heard a belt or something squealing, but it was raining so I really couldn't hear that well. I was able to drive back home...but what could be the problem???
