If you Search on "disc brake squeal" or "disc brake noise" you'll find hundreds of articles on dealing with the problem . . . . the Wiki entry is very good.
In my experience: some mechanics do not put an anti-squeal compound on the pads when they install them. That and reusing old hardware, or corroded hardware such as pins can cause problems with sticking: the pads should "float" freely.
Hasn't been a big problem for me . . . sometimes my cars have picked-up dirt, grit or such . . . backing-up for a while with the brakes lightly applied seems to help remove.
just get new ones
I had my brake discs and pads replaced in February after much squealing. The disks were ground to match the pads. Everything was fine/silent until May - now they are squealing terribly again. I've had them checked by the same mechanic that installed them and another. Both have said the brakes are fine and safe. The second mechanic said he'd never seen the kinds of pads that had been installed - they looked like they had copper in them (?). My car is a small Toyota Will.
The squealing is very random. There may be a few squeaks in the morning, the car sits all day, and when it's time to go home, it sounds like a screaming cat. They seem to be worse in the cold, but sometimes, they're fine.
Any ideas of what could be going on or how to fix? I was told my best bet is to get the pads and disks replaced yet again. (And hope it works.)
