A good quality full synthetic can save a tiny bit of money in short term mpg and in the long term from reduced wear for maintaining late life mpg & performance. But if you change your oil much more frequently than what the owner's manual recommends, the cost of the synthetic could exceed any savings. Some good ones include Mobil 1, Royal Purple, Redline, and AMSoil.
The important thing to worry about is the WEIGHT of the oil.
It's a number like 5w-20, which is what your car takes. It's very important to make sure you use ONLY THAT oil, because modern engines are very well made, and different oils will make the engine run not as good.
Now you have to choose the brand. Everyone has their own brand. I prefer Castrol. I"ve always found it to be very good oil.
There is regular oil, synthetic oil, part synthetic, and high mileage oils. I personally have never used higher mileage oils, not sure what the difference is.
I would suggest Castrol 5w-20 synthetic oil. Synthetic oil is slippery than normal oils, and it lasts longer in use, so you don't have to change it out as much. It costs a little bit more, but it helps the engine to run better.
But if you don't like to spend that much money, you can go with normal oil, but make sure it is the 5W-20 weight oil.
If you just go to walmart automotive, you can get your oil changed very easily and cheaply. The normal 5W-20 oil change is about $30-35. If you get synthetic oil, it will cost about $55.
So what you use is your choice, but make sure you use only 5W-20 weight oil.
Depends what you've been running in it. I wouldn't try changing to different types at this stage of the game.
Just use a good brand like Penszoil and make sure you use the correct weight, probably 5w30.
Change it along with the filter every 3,000 to 4,000 miles.
I think the high mileage oils are basically a rip-off.
For your 2004 MERCURY SABLE You would need:
SAE 5W-20 Signature Series 100% Synthetic Motor Oil (ALMQT)
Simply use a quality brand full synthetic or synthetic blend. Look at your owner's manual to find the recommended weight. Stick with that weight regardless of mileage.
Oil is oil. The part that causes sludge build-up in engines is the additives that different manufacturers add to their oils. The car was made to use a certain weight of oil- ask your dealer, then pick a brand of oil you like in that viscosity and stick with it. I use castrol or valvoline The advantages of synthetic oils are covered in other answers above, the disadvantage though is that the wear in an engines lubricated parts (assuming correct level/weight/filtration) is caused by the byproducts of combustion: ash, contaminants that get past the filters, exhaust gasses, general grit. With each turn of the crankshaft this stuff acts like sandpaper in your engine. Extending your oil change intervals, then, leaves that crap in there longer. If your driving is mostly highway the additional money might be worth it, otherwise stay with a good conventional.
Follow owners manual . Install same oil that was used in the past.
The engine has been designed to use the oil Ford specifies, why would you use anything else?
