What is wrong with my transmission?

grinding when shifting is attempted, engine running?

if so, need to "prove" you can actually shift it into a given gear. what takes place inside the cab maybe missleading.

engine off. in what ever gear it's in-doesn't matter for now, check/note position of selector on the trans itself. again, engine off, depress clutch, shift into any gear, then note the position of the selector again. different? shifter linkage, for now anyways, *maybe* considered good. if selector is the same. you just figured out the issue. shifter linkage/cable(app) issue.

if the selctor on the trans moved, one might consider it in a gear-as this scenario follows no grinding symptoms. then start it and try to move. no vehicle movement?, clutch is toast. but *likely* only iffin there were small issues leading up to this. like slipage and the like. not addressing throwout bearing assembly/system or the hydraulic function as that would produce grinding.

iffin you have grinding going on, then all that i would not address/omitted, maybe in play.

it is possible, that the trans selector input shaft is toast/not functioning. that, if it's merely that, can be addressed, trans in place. not totally sure bout that as i don't have the IBP on this. but that's somewhat *typical* for manual trans. top loaders or side loaders, transverse config or not.

sould help you narrow it down. good luck!

You have told that it refuses to engage into gear and this is one of the symptoms of transmission failure in vehicle. You haven't mention here that your car having which transmission. Anyways, I am just informing you some common signs of transmission faults and those are: Lack of response, Whining, Clunking and Humming sounds, Grinding and shaking, Check engine light, Leaking of fluid, Dragging clutch, Gear slipping, Transmission noisy in natural, Burning smell, Refuses go into gear etc. You can check this out from https://www.behance.net/gallery/19970691... and this will help you get some vital information regarding transmission issues with car whether having manual transmission or automatic transmission.

You have a worn clutch plate which cannot engage with the engine. Probable cause riding the clutch pedal whilst driving .

If there was no warning, noise, etc., then I would guess that you are still always still in neutral because the shifter broke. But hard to tell. Have you looked at the shifter?

Clutch.

Either a broken shift linkage, or a bad clutch.

Broken input shaft

hi, I own a stick shift 2003 hyundai tiburon and it refuses to engage into gear. I can physically change the gears, but the car acts as if it is in neutral (it won't run, it'll just rev up). what could the problem be? thanks
