What is this knob?

This is an ancient pick up, from about 1980

What is the black knob and what is its function?

There is a red arrow pointing to it.

Ancient? I resemble that remark!

An anti-skate adjustment would likely be right on the tonearm pivot. It's about the right size to be a 45 RPM spindle adapter, though.

If it's truly a control knob, I'd bet that it's the speed selector: 33 1/3 vs. 45 RPM.

It's not the speed selector - that is the first slide switch; also not a 45 adapter...........there's a youtube video that shows the turntable and explains what functions are on it - but it's not in English....

It looks like the anti skate adjustment. Anti skate is what keeps the tone arm from skipping across the record. It's needed because when a tone arm is adjusted properly it's barely putting any weight on the stylus.

That is an adaptor for playing 45 RPM records, which has a larger center hole than the 33s. Place it on the spindle, set your speed.
