What is this belt that looks frayed?

It's the serpentine belt that drives all the accessories, including the alternator and the water pump. If it breaks the motor will not be immediately destroyed like it would be if the timing belt broke, but you would not be able to drive it without causing damage from overheating.

Have it seen to now, that will avoid the risk of being stuck at the side of the road with the children in the car.

I would not drive, if this belt goes them your engine goes with it, seen it before.

Book it in tomorrow.

Edit

If this belt has not been replaced and you have no clue when the timing belt was done then get that done was well at the same time.

it's called a serpentine belt. it is crucial. when this belt gives out you will not have power steering, cooling of engine, maybe no power brakes. get it replaced before you hit the road. if you know of someone with basic mechanic skills they may be able to replace it for you, not a real hard job and not too expensive.

If you like being along side the highway with your hood up waiting for road service then go and hope. It is not a big thing to replace the belt. Do what you have to do.

Hello my car has been making noises like a flappy/crunchy noise. When I looked at it to try and investigate I found that the belt was frayed at the side. I know that the "cam" belt meansy cars buggered or a fan Belt can be repaired. I'm on holiday and have a 3hr drive home tomorrow. I have breakdown cover but not sure if I should find a mechanic up here in the morning or just set off home and hope for the best? Bit scared if it's cam belt or anything worse as I have my children with me too. Any help appreciated thanks
