What is the risk of getting a refurbished axle?

Sounds like it should have been totaled. If rear axle has been refurbished by manufacturer it will probably be ok. Most after market CV front axles are refurbished. If refurbished in house, I'd have a concern.

Depends on exactly what they're "refurbishing". If it's done properly by competent engineers it'll be fine, it'll be as good as and may even be better than the original.

it will make your head explode

as long as the axle is good and not bent then it,s just as good as a brand new one !

I bought a 2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe 3.8 in February. It barely has 3000 miles on it. Unfortunately, someone ran a red light and broad sided the car on the right rear. The wheel took a fair amount of damage and so did the rt rear quarter panel. 18k in damages and insurance won't total it. So now it's getting fixed at a repair shop that Allstate had the car towed to. This shop isn't known for it's 5 star quality and service and they suck at communication. I finally saw a list of all the parts being replaced, which mainly is cosmetic (pulling apart the quarter panel and painting it) plus replacing rt seat belt, rt front seat, dash, air bags, etc (both front air bags deployed). As far as mechanical, they need to replace the wheel, hub, bearing, axle and a few other things, but what concerns me is the fact that they are replacing the damaged axle with a 'refurbished' rt axle on a RWD car. I've expressed my concerns to the shop and to the adjuster, but no one seems to be hearing me or they weasle their way out of giving me a direct answer of why they are using a reconditioned axle and keep telling me it is safe to use. Am I getting completely screwed over? What's the risk? Please only serious answers and thanks for your replies in advance.
