What is the main difference between a used engine and a rebuild engine kit?

I bought a kia spectra from used dealer and they told me it wasnt running and that it could be rebuilt with a engine repair kit ?

What would be better a rebuild or a used engine ?

I agree with mahboo. If you either buy a rebuilt engine or rebuild it yourself,it can be considered a new engine other than the fact that you had to bore the cylinders and install new oversized pistons plus maybe get the crankshaft turned or install a new crankshaft.A properly rebuilt engine will last another 75,000-100,000 miles before it will need to be replaced. When you buy a used engine, there is usually absolutely no proof of how many miles the engine has,how the engine was taken care of,what's internally wrong with the engine, etc.Think about the labor intensive job of pulling your current motor, installing the used motor, starting it up to find out it has 6 pounds of oil pressure and a rod knocking due to bad engine bearings,60psi of cylinder compression in several cylinders due to bad rings, etc and the list can go on.Now you've gotta pull this engine back out and start over and guess what, you bought the motor as is so there's no warranty.OR lets say you bought it from a junkyard

Hello

A used engine is one that has been removed from another car. It may have no problems but the car was being sold for parts because it was in an accident

The rebuild option requires you to strip and rebuild with new parts. Only you wont know what to replace until you have stripped it and checked the parts. This can require special tools to both strip, check parts and rebuild the engine so would be a longer option time wise

From personal experience a rebuilt "stock" engine done by a racing engine shop is light years better than a junk yard engine.

A race engine shop will use the latest pistons, rings, bearing, oil pump, gaskets and valve guides. They'll re-manufacture the connecting rods and measure the crankshaft and camshaft to see weather or not it can be reused or replaced. Balancing the rotating assembly is worth it's weight in gold! .

A "USED" engine is straight out of a wrecked or junk yard car. You have no real idea of what condition it is in, or how long it will last.

A "REBUILT" engine has been opened up by a mechanic and parts have been inspected or replaced to insure that the engine will be reliable.

If you can afford it, go with the rebuilt engine.

The best and safest thing to do is buy a rebuilt long block. There is no guarantee a used engine will work.

a rebuilt engine be better. used engine have an unknown to it.
