What is the best way to get around a check engine light?

You cannot get around a check engine light. Even if you take the bulb out the problem DTC is stored in the computer. And when the shop hooks there cable to the data connector whatever codes are stored will appear and you will always fail the smog check. Also, depending on what code it is, you can also be doing more damage to your vehicle which will cost even more to have repaired. Sorry, but you are in the same boat as everyone else.

The light goes off when the fault is fixed. You have fallen into the money pit trap of replacing parts without knowing the fault.

Shows that a little knowledge is dangerous and yes you need to find what code is stored in the cars memory to detrmine the fault.

The dumb one is you, not the light! When the CEL comes on you get the codes read for free and find out what system is setting the light. Then you check the sensors and solenoids in the system. You may just have rust on the gas cap filler tube!

First, figure out why the light is on, Don't just throw parts at it. See what codes are stored in the ECM and go from there. In states with emission testing, a CEL on is an automatic fail.

Buy your own code reader, costs a little. but you can turn the light off with it. A light will sometimes come on just to remind you of certain mileage check points to do periodic inspections. Do some research to get the right code reader.

Make a written list on a piece of paper and then take it to a mechanic...so he knows what has been replaced and will not do it again. It also gives him a starting point where not to go.

. This is all you can do. It definitely would not have costed you that amount had you took it to them the first time.

". There are so many things it could be. "

No there isn't.

" I have put out over $1600 all ready for nothing."

Yes you have, more fool you, that is why you should have got the codes read and you would know straight away what the problem is. That is exactly what they put OBD ports on cars for.

You replaced parts without getting the code read? Watch it be an evap leak after you've replaced all those parts.

You need to find out what code is set that turns on your light. Then fix that problem !

um, you have retrieved the codes from the car's computer that would tell you *why* the light is on, right?

there has got to be a way around the check engin light. I have replaced all the 02 sensers, tune up, wires. the engine is running great and still this dam light is coming on. There are so many things it could be. just so some *** can take my hard earned money I have to do this crap. There has to be a way around this. I have put out over $1600 all ready for nothing. all because of a dum light. Please can some one tell me how to get around this dam thing?

LOL!!
