What is a helpful polish for old chrome?

I had a classic car with a lot of chrome, and there were special chrome cleaning products that did an excellent job. Just be sure to use a light touch, because chrome is a thin layer of electroplating, and it is possible to rub it off, which sharply reduces the value of the object. If you are trying to get into nooks and crannies, use something soft such as an old toothbrush.
