Sounds like, just guessing, shift linkage is disconnected part way.
its not the clutch, its the linkage.
Please, when asking automotive questions always include the year make and model of the car. They have different clutch linkage mechanisms.
More than likely, your clutch slave cylinder is leaking fluid.
These are good answers but you won't know till you check. My first car did something like this, and a bearing fell apart in my trans causing some gears to go bye bye. Drain the fluid while checking for metal, then stick a long magnet in the drain hole and see if you pull out anything. Checking the fluid is always a good starting point
If the clutch is working, you snapped off a shifting fork in the trans-axle or the shifter cable let go in the console.

I was driving home and the gear stick went really soft.
Suddenly I found that I couldn't get it into either 2nd or 4th gear (or reverse).
*The entire bottom row of stick positions.
I was/am able to get it into the top row of by fiddling around heaps and luckily I could get home using them.
I need to know what happened, if it's likely to get worse, and how much fixing it is likely to cost (whole clutch replacement??).
It's a 97 mitsubishi mirage.
Thanks.
