Basically, the more torque the engine in a car makes, the easier it is for that car to accelerate. For instance, a car with a 200-horsepower engine that also produces 175 lb.-ft. of torque might be able to accelerate to 60 mph in 7.4 seconds. If the torque of that same car's engine were increased to 205 lb.ft. of torque, then, it might be able to reach 60 mph faster, maybe in 7 seconds flat or less, along with a slight increase in top speed. Similarly, a car with an engine that produces 200 horsepower and 600 lb.ft. of torque would accelerate faster than the car with the same amount horsepower but only 205 lb.ft. of torque.
Heavy load trucks depend on high torque. Those trucks usually are powered by diesel engines that produce very large amounts of torque. Without such high torque output, those trucks would struggle to get moving.
Torque is usually measured in lbs/ft. It is the rotational force of the engine. Engines usually develop peak horsepower at a high engine speed, so low speed torque is what makes your car take off quick. from school i know torque is the product of force times the arm to the point of rotation
basicly like a bar rotating about a point
and has units of Nm or joules
but then you have the other one WORK which is also Nm or joules
so what are they referring to in cars?
