Sounds like the shift linkage slipped when you slammed it. Try starting the engine in any of the other positions - one of them should be neutral, which will allow you to start it. From there reverse should be the next position toward park and drive should be the next position toward low. A mechanic or transmission shop should be able to correct it quickly.

It sounds like your shifter linkage is FUBAR.

And you thought the ticket was expensive.

****** up your shift selector/cable/linkage. Try finding neutral, and start it there. One click down is drive, one click up is reverse. Have fun with that. Park on a wheel chock.

I got a parking ticket tonight and I was really upset about it so when I moved my car and reparked it I slammed the shifter into park out of anger. The shifter stopped in reverse and then when I put it in drive the car moved backwards as if it was in reverse. I put the car in park with the idea of restarting it and it won't turn over (feels like the car might still think it's in revere). Any ideas as to what could be wrong with it?
