What+could+be+wrong+with+the+transmission%3F?

sounds like a manual transmission. transmission would have to be pulled and opened up. then you need to check for stripped gears and shims while you are in there you might want to do the bearings if you decide to buy it. Hope this helps

NO! Not unless the price is riddiculous low, like a few hundred dollars total. The fact it won't go into second means it needs a transmission or rebuild. BUT, it is never wise to assume that the defect you discovered (or were told about) is the only thing wrong with the car. And protestations by the seller availrth nought because he may not know either.

If there is a major flaw like this outstanding, then it is a down car, a non-runner, a fixxer. If he wants to fix it himself then he can get a fair price. Like this it is junkyard material, even if the interior is clean.

You can get a used transmission for $100-200 at a pick n pull and nstall it yourself or pay $300-$500 to have it put in. Before you do anything rule out the linkage. Linkage or motor mounts could (imaginably) prevent you from selecting a gear. I would doubt it.

Do not buy! You are most likely up for a transmission overhaul, at the least. You can do this in a number of ways, but it would be best to get a second hand trans from a wreckers and have that rebuilt (better safe than sorry) or take the gamble and install it as is.

To have second gear not working means it has done one too many burnouts, so next to go could be the differential, and you can almost guarantee the engine has had a flogging.

Hi this sounds like it needs a new gearbox so check around to see how much one is.

I seen a very nice manual car I am interested in buying. Only problem is it doesn't shift into second gear. But all the other gears work. Is it worth buying with that being said? What could the problem be and how much would it cost to fix?
