What causes my 1997 thunderbird to overheat?

How often does it overheat? If it always overheats after about 5 to 15 minutes of operation your thermostat may be stuck closed. Luckily for you, it's a $10 part and easy to replace.

If thats not the case you should make sure you have sufficient coolant. With the engine cold inspect the coolant overflow bottle to confirm it is filled to the line.

Without more information it's difficult to recommend anything else.

Bad thermostat, low coolant, plugged radiator, failed electric fan, bad head gasket, cracked head, or cracked block.

#1. When was the last time that your cooling system was drained, flushed and CLEANED with one part powered acid cooling system cleaner?

#2. If anyone has ever dumped discount store antifreeze in any cooling system built in 1995 or newer car it will not mix with the factory ling life chemical antifreeze that came in the system when it was new. Eventually it will plug the cooling system.
