Conventional oil is purified from oil pumped from the ground. It will still have some impurities and it won't be the ideal molecule so it breaks down into sludge more easily and requires more additives to make it work leaving less room for engine cleaning detergents.
A good quality synthetic such as amsoil mobil 1, royal purple or redline will last longer and keep the engine cleaner with less engine wear. After tens of thousands miles this means better mpg, better horsepower. Even after a few thousand miles it is lab tested to be better than brand new conventional oil. Because of this and because it costs more it is stupid to change it too frequently.
