Transmission pan leaking 97 dodge ram 1500?

Did you tighten the pan bolts in the correct pattern? If not, you may have warped the pan just enough to cause a leak. You will also need to torque them in the same pattern as well. The gasket may have slipped and isn't sealing correctly. Get yourself a torque wrench and a copy of the sequence the bolts are suppose to be tighten and follow it and see what happens. If it still leaks, you will most likely have to remove the pan again, and get a new gasket and start all over. You can rent a torque wrench at most rental places or even at some auto parts stores.

Use permatex hi-tack gasket sealer the small can with a brush it works FAR better than RTV ever dreamed it could.

No, you need to drain into CLEAN container, and save. Pull pan, and see if mounting holes are dished out. Previous repairman probably over-torqued bolts. Either straighten pan flange on flat, anvil-like surface, or replace pan. Clean both gasket surfaces THOROUGHLY. Inspect transmission flange for cracks. (904 trans.?) Replace dip-stick O-ring/seal, will have to pull 1 bellhousing bolt where support bracket is located. Thin bead of RTV sealer on both sides of gasket, re-install pan loosely till all bolts are threaded. Snug in criss-cross pattern till gasket JUST starts to pooch out. Re-fill, run and check for leaks. Good luck.

not really any magic fix for that. Remove the pan bolts but leave one corner tightened up , and as you loosen that corner the opposite side will begin to drop, and use a big foil turkey pan (a new one, about 2-3 bucks at Kroger) to catch the fluid as it drains out that lower end. Remove the pan completely and carefully to make sure you can get all that fluid into the turkey pan. Then clean the gasket, pan and trans mounting surfaces very well, and get some form a gasket (RTV) made for the high heat of trans fluid and re-install the pan with the RTV on both sides of the gasket (best to get a new gasket) and reinstall pan, alternating the tightening from corner to corner so not to bind the pan/gasket. I HIGHLY recommend a torque wrench for this. Borrow one, get one from harbor freight, because its worth it. Re-fill trans with fluid, and recheck for leaks. Of course the turkey pan cannot be used for food now or ever, but you knew that.

no RTV but tighten the pan bolts 110 inch pounds should be good. some auto parts stores do rent tools.

So I decided it was time to change the transmission fluid. The pan looked like it had been leaking before.

So I removed the pan, drained the fluid, replaced the gasket and filter. Refilled the fluid.

I read that I am only supposed to tighten the pan to like 15 fps however I don't have a torque wrench, so I just snugged them up. Not too tight...or so I thought.

Now it is leaking fluid. So far about a quart overnight.

What do I do? Is there some kind of sealant I can put around the gasket so I don't have to remove the whole pan and waste all that new fluid?
