If it hasn't been changed at 113K miles, then it's no good to you in that car. It's all wasted out, all worn out, and offers almost no protection.
It will get changed, and you'll have brand new fluid to then protect your neat car. Even try synthetic tranny fluid, I changed out my dad's 95 Buick with synthetic and it runs soooo much smoother, shifts effortlessly.
As the three previous and I say, change the fluid & filter. The only time bad fluid is left alone, is when the trans is on it;s last leg and the debris in the fluid is the only thing providing friction in the clutch pack so the car will move. You;re not near that, but you do have a problem. When that car was new, it shifted fine when it was cold out. It may be a weak shift solenoid. But it;s probably getting close to be needing a rebuild. Get it scanned for trans codes.
You seem to have failed to mention if you had checked the fluid level yourself. As for changing it, that would be the first thing anyone that knows anything would tell you to do. And let it be known my electronic shifting transmission doesn't wait longer to shift when it is cold. That and the old wife's tail about never changing the fluid is bull.
I discovered the trans fluid had turned black in our Camry. Had trans flushed and new fluid. Lucky us that its ok now after a year. I'll never not change the trans fluid again. Everyone is right Change the Fluid today
fluid change may be in order, Keep in mind that with todays electronically controlled transmissions upshifts are delayed when engine is cold, This warms engine to operating temperature quicker to satisfy emissions folks.
My transmission is really slow to shift in the morning (or whenever its not wormed up) Now let me explain...
I own a 2001 Firebird V6 (A4) with about 113,000 miles on the tranny (i'm not sure if the fluid has ever been changed). Recently I had to replace my engine due to a cracked head, But anyway the guy that did it said that he lost some tranny fluid in the progress. So he added a little more. Ive heard that changing old fluid can be bad for it. Could this little bit (less than a quart) be causing the slow shift?
Their is also a very noticeable smell (like its is burning really rich) coming from the car. Could this be the transmission?
And finally should I even change the fluid? ...Or let it go to burn itself up?
