Grab a dictionary and look up "thermal" just for fun, then throw in "overload" for kicks.

Melting.

To put it in easy terms the motor can get to hot from working hard or damage and wear or poor maintenance issues, So with that being said if motor gets hot and stops there can be a "push" button reset or an internal automatic reset that can and or will reset when the motor cools enough. But, the term for this condition is called a thermal overload.
