Standard or hei distributor?

If there is a wire in the center of the cap going to an ignition coil and it has a metal door on the side for access to the points, it's a standard ignition. The HEI distributor has the coil on top of the cap itself with no coil wire and no door since no points. Just about everything made 1975 or after should be HEI.

If it looks like this http://www.jegs.com/i/Proform/809/934408... it's an HEI and was original style for that year. The vacuum can is for the vacuum advance. Your plug gap was .045.

If it has a smaller cap with a small sliding metal door on the side and two spring clips holding it to the distributer, it's a points style. You will still need to see if it's been upgraded or still original points set up. .035 plug gap if it's points.

The HEI (high energy ignition) distributor cap twice as big as the old points style cap. The coil is on the top of the cap. There is an ignition module and pick-up coil is inside of the lower housing.

In '79, the factory put HEI's in them.
