You should be cautious about it. Pretending to be a utility worker is a very old and very popular way of casing homes for burglary - he now knows you don't have dogs to be concerned about and has had a look at a secluded part of the house where entry is easiest. Our meter readers are trained to show their company ID whenever they make customer contact.
Every meter reader I have seen recently has a hand-held electronic gadget for entering the readings - they no longer write them down on paper. Probably just a burglar casing the joint - he now knows all of your security systems, the type of door lock and window catches you have, and may have an idea of your work hours or where you keep your car keys and other valuables as well.
They should have a uniform on and a identification badge on, never let anyone in your house without inspecting the badge.
Hopefully he wasn't "some random guy" but instead someone with credentials. Random guys walking onto my property would not have a good day.
There is nothing to be worried But when ever any strange or company guy comes asked ID card to confirm his identity. Good that guy is company guy only who read reading of it. And if any wrong person than also he cannot do any thing with that reading.
he was just reading your meter for the gas and electric company. they do that ever other month or so to make sure they are with in range of their estimate of your power usage.
This morning some guy came and just said i've come to check the gas and electrics, and i was pretty tired and didn't think much of it.
He came in i showed him my meter and he just jotted 1 or 2 things down and left.
To be honest i don't see what he could do with any of that information, and i don't really know if someone can gain anything by just looking at someones gas meter.
But i was just wondering whether i should be cautious about it.
Anyone know?
Again i really don't think he could do anything with that information, but i don't really know.
thanks
