Should I replace my cars engine or just buy a new car?

For you, not being mechanical, I would push you toward the dealership. But they are sharks. Never pay sticker price. Low ball them and keep asking for more warranty or service or lower price. Make them work for your sale. I hear it is good to go at the end of the month as they want to make a sale more.

many factors there. If you current car is in good body shape (like no rust, floor pans not rotted and etc.) than i would take it a normal mechanic (not dealership) and ask him to check transmission, it it has life left in it, i would replace the engine instead of getting another used car. Also check body mounts and bushings, they are expensive to replace.

Getting another used car for 2000$ is same as gambling, you should expect to put some money in, they are so cheap for a reason.

Also with such cars dealers usually sell them "as is" meaning they wont be responsible for the car after it drive out of dealership.

try to take it to another mechanic, because maybe there's just some parts in the engine that needs to be changed if its just overheating, well it will cost you less if it's just one or two parts. Get a second opinion.

since it is a 2001 auto I am assuming it has well over 100,000 miles proably not worth putting a new engine in look around for a used motor should be able to get one for 5/6 hundred save money cuz you are going to need other repairs maintenance done in the near future

Consult some other mechanic,I think that will be better...

Ok so im 17 and i have basically no knowledge about cars or replacing engines. I bought my car (2001 chevy malibu) 3 months ago for $2500 and after a month of driving it it started overheating and now the engine is f***** up.When i bought the car i had it inspected and it passed safety and emissions so i dont know how they didn't find anything wrong with it. I took it to a shop and they said the only way to drive it again is get a whole new engine put in. This will cost me about the same as how much i paid for the car. What are some risks that come with replacing an engine in an old car? Is it worth it? Im just wondering if it would be a better investment to just buy a used car from a dealership.
