Should I get my transmission rebuilt?

$3,500 is a little steep but still in the ball park. Get two more estimates from transmission shops. If you want to know which ones, ask some mechanics where they would take their cars. If you do have a good mechanic, ask him for an estimate on installing a new transmission. We assume you feel confident the transmission is the problem.

My son's buddy had a tranny go bad in his truck. He took it to a tranny shop and it was only $800 to get rebuilt, but of course it was an American built truck (but 4x4). It took them about 2 hours to remove and install the tranny. They also had a problem with the engine running rough. The screwed around with it for quite a while. I told my son that I would fix the engine running problem for $150 per hour. He agreed. It took me 37 seconds to fix it, so it cost $2.05. I would be a professional mechanic, but I can't make a living at even $150/hour and for some reason people do not usually want to pay that much.

Honestly you could probably find a used transmission for 1300 and bolt it up .

... instead of rebuilding that one, why not get one that is rebuilt already and have that dropped in.

I have a Toyota Tacoma 2008 v6 with a transmission problem. I am the second owner of the truck and have 170,000 miles on it, today I took it to a transmission shop and I was told the first owner never did a trannission fluid change on it and that the third gear is messed up. Basically they told me to save up to 3500 so they could do everything including the fluid change, labor, and the broken parts that need to be replaced.. They said they still have to take a look at it so they said to do it all at once do try can fix it then and there. Now would you guys recomend I fix my truck becuase it has the TRD package and its still pretty new. It's only a 2008 everything else runs perfect on it.
