Should I get my oil changed?

It is not uncommon for newer vehicles to be able to go 10,000 miles between oil changes considering they are using Synthetic Oils. In fact you are able to go 25,000 miles between oil changes using AMSOIL. With AMSOIL you can go 25,000 miles on the same oil and filter as well get a 6% savings in fuel. Big Oil Companies do not want you to know about AMSOIL in order to keep you a slave to the every 3,000 mile oil change rule.

Since 2010 Toyota cars come from the factory with 0W-20 full synthetic motor oil and yest they "claim" you can go 10,000 miles between oil changes. I personally read the back side of a 0W-20 full synthetic oil bottle at the local Toyota Dealer yesterday. On the back it read that some of the contents do not come from America.

To keep your warranty you can use Mobil1 0W-20 but the oil bust be changed every 5,000 miles.

10,000 miles sounds about right, that's the standard for getting your oil changed. if you're really worried about your oil you could always check it with the dip stick by your engine that can tell you if you're low on oil or if it's full of junk

first oil change should be around 3500 miles and after that the normal change should be fine.

regular oil should be changed every 3000-4000 miles. synthetic should be changed every 5000-6000 miles. If you drive on dusty roads etc. change it more often.10000 miles is too much no mater what they tell you.

These vehicles have oil life monitors that track how many cold starts and short trips you take. How you drive is just as important as mileage. Cold starts and short trips KILL oil, even synthetic. Toyota oil life monitors will go 10K if you do a good mix of highway/city. But they'll tell you to change oil sooner if they detect just city stop and go driving. In any case, if you want to be conservative, change it at 5,000-7,000. And you MUST use synthetic oil.

TK's answer is the only good one here.

Check your owner's manual. It will have the best recommendation.

I think synthetic oil is supposed to break down at a slower rate than regular oil, allowing it to go longer between changes.

Check the manual also for an operator's information system. Some newer cars will monitor how the car is used, and tell you how much oil life is left and when you need to change it. I don't know if Scion's do this, but if it does, that would be the best indication of when to get it changed.

10000 is too much. they probably told you that so the cart goes bad quicker so you have to buy a new one. oil should be changed every 5-6000 miles

I bought a new Scion iQ in January (4 months ago). After I hit 3000 miles last week, I took it to the dealer to get its oil changed.

I was told that I wouldn't need to get it changed until I hit 10,000 miles. The car uses synthetic oil. I was astounded as I had always changed my oil every 3000-5000 miles, but never 10,000.

Doesn't that seem a bit high? If it's true, how come? I'm very suspicious. Any detailed explanation would be deeply appreciated.

Thank you!
