Should I change the head bolts when replacing the cylinder head?

Posted at: 2015-01-07
I have a 2000 mitsubishi l200 triton 3.0 petrol/lpg.

I am replacing the cylinder head, but do I need to replace the head bolts, or would it be ok to leave them?

They're stretch bolts, you have to change them.

Contact your local Mitsu dealer and ask if they're stretch bolts or not. If they are, they're a one-time-use and need to be replaced.

Only designed to be used once, as they are angular tightened stretch bolts.

New head bolts are usually recommended, but if the torque procedure involves torquing to a specific value and tightening another so-many degrees they are deliberately stretched during installation and must be replaced.

You replace them if they are stretched. Very accurate measurement needed.

just replace them, they're just bolts.

It is considered good practice to fit new head bolts. they do not cost much so don't skimp.
