Semi automatic cars... can you rev and launch if you are in the manual shifting mode?

for example have it in first gear, then brake and gas to rev and finally launch when releasing the break?

Yes it will, you still have a torque converter dissipating the energy. I don't recommend it on a stock transmission, but you can do it.

Wont give you much if any gain as the torque converter locks up at a fairly low rpm anyway, and will put a lot of strain on the transmission.

Fastest launch I have found is to just plant boot and let the computer handle it. The traction control and shifting at exactly the right rpm get it moving pretty well. Launching at higher revs would just result in wheelspin or the traction control taking over anyway.

This is with a Toyota Blade, which is basically a 275hp Corolla, with a six speed auto. It has sport mode, and paddle shifters, but in a straight drag race, just leave them alone.

The "manual" mode has it's uses in other situations, like overtaking and winding hilly roads where you can select the right gear manually, and don't need to wait for the engine to build up revs and the transmission to shift down 3 gears when you want to overtake.

But off the line, just plant boot.

HI NO.. you can NOT rev the motor its an automatic and well engage when put in 1st. Manual shifting mode just let you chose the gear it does not have a non lock up. like a manual car has a clutch pedal to hold the power away from the transmission..

good luck

Yes on many of them.

Then you enjoy he sit on the side of the road waiting for the tow truck to get you to have a new transmission.

Warranty does not cover it.

It will do it 2 or 3 times then you buy a new gear box.

im not talking about neutral dropping, Im talking about having it in "Manual Mode" and in "first gear" holding down the break and pressing the gas pedal here and there to rev the engine, then finally letting go of the break while still holding down on the gas.

Torque converter doesn't dissipate energy because oil isn't compressible. Doing a neutral drop is very hard on clutch packs inside the transmission and is overall a really really bad idea....unless you have a spare $2,500 for trans rebuild.
