Rust under a used car?

Posted at: 2015-01-07
Why not pick up a used Subaru? Double (possibly almost triple) the gas mileage, known to last a long time with routine maintenance. Plus, they are great in the snow.

The 5.4L Expedition 4x4 gets a whopping 11mpg city (when new). With gas prices expected to rise even more, travel will become pricey fast!

Looks like they replaced the brake lines recently, frame looks like it is rotting, plus tire look bad, add another $600-$900 for new rubber.

13 years old, lots of salt in winter, I would be suspicious if there was little rust. 155K translates to around 12k miles per year. Average mileage. $4k is a bit high, but hows the body? Does everything work? Do a compression test and check brakes line pressure

This is the perfect example why I have the opinion that it's smart have the rust protection package when you buy a new car. The extra dollars at the beginning of your new car ownership will pay off. Too many new car buyers turn down this when the salesman offers it.

Why would you want to buy a rusty Ford with a discontinued engine?

Absolutely NO!!! A 2001 should not have that kind of rust. With old cars it's to be expected but even then rust is a very bad thing. at 155k $4000 is extremely overpriced. You are being taken advantage of.

I'm in the market for a used car and I went and looked at a 2001 Ford Expedition today. It has about 155k on it and is being sold for 4k. When I looked under the car, there seemed to be a lot of rust. I plan on having any used car I think of purchasing professionally inspected beforehand but should I even give this a second look?

I live in the midwest, so we salt heavily during the winter.

I'm also a college student and a female so I think the seller is trying to take advantage of this as well.

Under rear

Not the best photos but this seemed to be consistent under the car from front to back.

Any help would be wonderful. I love the SUV but I don't want to inherit a ton of problems and a money pit.
