Running without a fuel pump?

The model T had no fuel pump - the tank was located high enough to gravity feed the engine. That also meant the early Model T would not go up steep hills without backing up them. Later versions had the tank above the engine so hills could be climbed in forward gears.

That wouldn't work on your Park Avenue. It has multi-port fuel injection that requires high pressure from the pump to operate. On the other hand, if you could mount the fuel tank 150 feet above your car you would not need a fuel pump.

Just like KERMIT said, the gas tank is low in the car, fuel will not flow up to the engine.

It seems If you cannot afford a fuel pump, they you surely cannot afford to get gas for such an old gas guzzler, a fuel pump cannot be much more than 1 or 2 fill ups.

HI, They have always had fuel pumps .. Just not electric ... but Manuel.... They were mounted at the front of the motor (on the side) and were driven by a lever that stuck into the motor and was moved up and down by an eccentric attachment mounted to the cam shaft at the front of the motor..

If you google an old cars fuel pump with a picture you well see the lever I'm talking about.

Before that... the gas tank was mounted above the motor and carb. and the fuel was gravity feed just like motorcycles before fuel injection..

good luck

Fuel like water does not run uphill. Either gravity flow or a pump have to be used. Some early race cars had a hand pump which driver or inboard mechanic pumped. Electric or mechanical you have to have a fuel pump. Gravity flow is not an option on cars these days.

highly doubt it.

Hello fellow mechanics. I have a 1989 buick park avenue/electra the fuel pump is bad it hadnt ever been replaced and it was 25 years old now so I took it out and now without the extra cash to go buy a fuel pump i have a car on jacks sitting in my driveway and a gas tank sitting on the side of my house. I was watching youtube last night and it got me thinking about these older cars. How did they run without a fuel pump if they werent gravity fed. now I understand taking out the fuel pump in the equation adds quite a bit of a vacuum to the line. So I figured what if I put some fuel line in place for the fuel pump and let it feed that way but I wasnt sure wether or not it would work and I'd prefer not to put it all together just to find out it dosnt work. So this is were you come in fellow mechanic I want to know if you think this would work.
