First make sure you are using the correct viscosity oil and a good quality filter. Other than that i would suspect a faulty oil pressure sender unit, but to be sure you can install an oil pressure gauge to get an actual reading, and compare to factory specs.
if you have used penzoil or quaker state you may only have to remove the oil pan and clean all the junk out of the pickup screen. but you will still have a waxy build up on every thing inside the engine
Remove stock oil-pressure sending unit, and install a test gauge in it's place. Need a minimum of 15-20 PSIG at idle, then 10 psig per 1000 RPM. If lower than that, you have issues. Worn oil pump, clogged oil passages not allowing oil back in pan, clogged pump pick-up, or excessive bearing clearances.
if you don,t hear any knocking in the engine then change the oil pressure sending unit, it should be around close to the oil filter !
bad sending unit or connection at the sending unit is where I would start.
if it's neither then look into the gauge
When driving my Dodge Dakota, the oil pressure stays at around half or lower. But when I idle, it generally drops to 0 until I get going to about 30 MPH. Today it began doing it when I was driving at around 55 MPH.
There is oil in it. So what could be the issue?
