when something like that happens to me i drive a long screwdriver through the filter or use a cup filter wrench that fits over the end of the filter and use a 3/8 ratchet on it !

An oil-spanner isn't working?

Drive a screwdriver thru the Mo-Fo and there you go.

What are you using for an oil filter wrench? A heavy duty cup style always works.

Do NOT use a screwdriver. That'll just peel open the can and leave the steel plate. Then you'll have to chisel that off. Try the sandpaper trick or buy a new wrench like this. It's made by Lisle tools. Find it at any auto parts store

If whatever wrench/tool you're using is slipping, try using a piece of rough grit sandpaper face-down on the filter between the wrench and the filter for a better grip. Sometimes you can even unscrew them by hand using just the sandpaper if you've got a strong grip.

I've also used sandpaper and a pipe wrench for leverage and grip. Once I used sandpaper and a large pair of channel locks. If you've got clearance to get a long wrench on it, the longer the lever arm the better. If all else fails the jam-the-screwdriver-through-it method also usually works but it's messy.

Assuming you have a proper oil filter wrench and that isn't working, If there is room, you can hammer a punch through midway down the filter, Horizontally through the center and then use it like a T handle and turn it off.
