My wife accidentally put 1/2 a gallon of Dexcool in our 2000 Impala. Bad? or OK?

3.4L. What should I do?

Well that all depends where she put it! if it went into the cooling system you better go and have a pressure test done to find the big leak. Half a gallon is too much..it had to go somewhere. I'm betting a water pump seal or intake gasket is leaking.

That's what your vehicle had in it when it rolled out of the factory, and is what GM recommends. However, you fail to mention the critical detail of what coolant it has in it now - it is strongly not recommended to mix different types of coolants, as they can solidify in the radiator and block. Also, why did she have to put in that much??? That's a really bad sign in and of itself. Take it to the dealership or other competent shop and get it checked out, and flushed if need be.

Edit: Yes, the manual CLEARLY states to use DexCool. "All makes" generic (green) antifreeze is the WORST thing to mix with DexCool, as it is silicated and may gel up. Get the cooling system flushed immediately!

Yes, it's bad to mix different types of coolant. Read this post on coolants

Where did she put it? Was the Dexcool lableled 50/50 or was it 100% pure?

Hi so she was trying to do things on the cheap not a good idea. drain the system and put in the correct antifreeze solution.

after 1996, gm used dexcool in the system, you should be just fine. if she had added green to that system, id worry.

How do you accidentally put Dexcool in anything? What did she put it in - the trunk?

3.4 is more than half a gallon ..and this side of the pond we have no idea what dexcool is
