My service engine soon light is on?

The service indicate light simply means that your computer is indicating an error code. I would suggest going to an automotive parts place (such as autozone) and ask them to read you computer error message. this is a free service. Record what the error message is, then ask them to reset your computers error messages.

When they reset the error messages, your service light will go out. IF it does not come back, you don't have a problem. If it does come back, ask them to read the code again to make certain it is the same message. If it reappears, then you can decide based on what the problem is whether to fix it on not.

In general, it could be something as simple as you gas cap is not tight. It does not hurt you to keep on driving the car it the light is on. So if the repairs are too expensive you could defer working on the item.

Also, on a lot of cars the computer code message is a check engine light. The service engine light sometimes is based on mileage and is a reminder that its time for a oil change. I'm not certain how the oldsmobile is configured, look at your service manual and it may tell you.

Numerous things can cause the check engine light to come on. Everything from a loose gas cap to internal engine or transmission problems. Car has to have the diagnostics run. It will show the issue. Some shops will run the diag. free, others charge. If they charge (which is normal) ask if they will credit the cost to the repair.

It's simply a reminder to service your engine. It is NOT a warning light that anything is wrong.

On the driver's side there is fuse panel. You will need to remove the cover and there you will see a reset button. Turn the ignition switch to "on" and then press the button, the light will flash on and off, then press and hold the reset button until the light goes off. This will also work for the TPS system.

Service engine soon simply means it's time to get the oil changed. Check Engine is the light that means you have to take it in to have the codes read by a mechanic. You can Google/YouTube the Make, year, and model of your car and the words Clearing the Service Engine Soon light. The other thing you could do is take it in for an oil change and have them actually service it and cancel the light. At 135,000 you really need to make sure that you have clean, full oil in the engine. It wouldn't be unusual for it to leak or burn resulting in oil loss. A loss of oil could easily lead to a catastrophic failure of your engine rendering it a very expensive paperweight.

Agree with others on here with one car care tip. Get some vehicle software to remind you when any of your scheduled car maintenance is due. I use it and currently have over 150,000 on my truck. I use Automotive Wolf Vehicle Maintenance Software. Check it out here:

or here

Service engine soon means time to do its normally scheduled maintenance.

Its not a Check Engine Light

After doing your service, there should be a button that you put the key in to reset it.

Whats normally the cause of this? I have a 2002 oldsmobile alero that has about 135,600 miles on it. I bought it used a couple months ago. Also any suggested shops to check it out? I know alot of places try conning you into things you don't need. Just wanna get it looked at and fixed if needed. Thanks!
