ill be honest without knowing more information about engine and ur set up its extremely difficult to help you out... they work in different ways. or the way things are hooked up are differently... not all distributors function the same.
make sure you have a for sure power source going into the coil...
If this car has point type distributor, you could remove the center hi tension wire from the distributor and place it so it has a small spark gap to ground. Then remove the low tension wire that leads to the distributor points at the distributor. With the ignition on, alternately ground and remove ground from the low tension point wire. You should see a spark on the high tension lead.
One problem with point type cars is that wear occurs on the points, gradually reducing the point opening gap until they no longer open at all. Then no spark, because although current will be flowing through the low voltage part of the coil, the magnetic field never collapses to create the high voltage pulse in the secondary winding of the coil.
That's right! we don't need anymore information then knowing you're playing with a Frankenstein butcher job. It's never going to run.
your problem is most likely in your "custom" wiring job, and it would help to know what kind of car it is. you spent more time telling us it didn't matter than it would have taken to just tell us. you're right, the general populace is "shockingly stupid," thank you for solidifying that statement
IT would really help to know the model/year of the vehicle. If it has a distributor, obviously there is a coil wire going to the distributor. Pull the coil wire from the distributor and see if that gives a spark. If not, you obviously have a points/ignition module problems/
***the make/model is not relevant, the car has a complete engine swap and custom wiring
Well guys my car is always breaking, and usually I get great answers here. Let me tell you what's wrong this time!
So now the car is cranking but not starting. I've done the "screwdriver" test and I'm not getting any spark. What happened was the previous owner wired the car so the ignition coil gets power from a wire running to the fusebox. It only gets power when I turn the key, but something broke giving the coil constant power. When I was off on spring break the coil fried and the car wouldn't start. I replaced the coil and the car still won't start. The starter still works, ignition barrel is good, but it wouldnt start. I even tried starting the car by running a wire from the coil to the battery...still nothing
I want to think it's the distributor, but it still spins when I crank the car. I would check by removing the cap but I'm sick of replacing parts that dont fix the car, and I'd have to remove the radiator/jack the car up (I have no jack stands) to fix it.
So, anyone with experience, what do you think it is?
Any ideas/tests I can do would be GREAT appreciated
I was just going to sell the car as a project, but craigslist is a cruel *****. I have learned how shockingly stupid the general populace is, and there are way too many people who think they can haggle me down to the bone because they've watched too much pawn stars.
As always, any help is appreciated!
